Effect of Surface Roughness on the Performance of Mechanical Parts
Surface roughness has a great influence on the service performance and service life of parts.
1. Influencing the Wear Resistance of Parts
The rougher the surface, the greater the friction coefficient and the faster the wear of the relative moving surface. However, the surface is too smooth, because of the extrusion of lubricating oil or the adsorption between molecules, it will also increase friction resistance and accelerate wear. _
2. Stability Affecting Coordination Properties
The roughness of the part surface has a great influence on all kinds of matching. For clearance fit, two parts with rough surface will wear rapidly when they move relatively, which will increase the clearance and affect the fit property; for interference fit, the micro-peaks on the surface are easily flattened and plastic deformation occurs, which will reduce the actual effective interference after assembly and reduce the joint strength; for transition fit, the surface is rough due to multi-purpose pressure and hammer-tapping assembly. Degree also loosens the fit.
3. Influencing fatigue strength
The failure of parts subjected to alternating loads is mostly caused by fatigue cracks on the surface. Fatigue cracks are mainly caused by stress concentration caused by the valleys of surface micro-peaks and valleys. The rougher the surface of the part is, the deeper the trough is, the more serious the stress concentration is. Therefore, the surface roughness affects the fatigue strength of parts.
4. Influencing Corrosion Resistance
Corrosive substances are easy to accumulate in the micro-valleys of rough surfaces. Over time, these corrosive substances will penetrate into the inner metal layer and cause surface corrosion.
In addition, surface roughness has great influence on contact stiffness, sealability, product appearance, surface optical properties, conductivity and thermal conductivity, and bonding strength of surface bonding. Therefore, when designing the accuracy of geometric parameters of parts, it is necessary to put forward reasonable surface roughness requirements to ensure the performance of mechanical parts.
