There are four main types of water-based lubricants:
water mixed with oil, water mixed with water, semi-synthetic and synthetic.
The water-based lubricants are the best, because when lubricants are used, the water is deposited on the surface of the molds, which can help remove the mold. In general, the proportion of this type of lubricant is 30 portions of water mixed with one portion of oil. In extreme cases, the ratio could reach 100:1. Oils that can be used in lubricants include heavy oils, animal fats, plant fats, and synthetic oils.
Heavy residual oil is viscous at room temperature, and it becomes thin film at high temperature in die casting process. Adding other substances to the lubricant can control the viscosity and thermal properties of the emulsion.
These include graphite, aluminum and mica. Other chemical additives can avoid dust and oxidation. Emulsifiers can be added to water-based lubricants so that oil-based lubricants can be added to water, including soap, alcohol and ethylene oxide. For a long time, the commonly used solvent based lubricants include diesel and gasoline. They are good for casting, but small explosions occur during each die-casting process, resulting in the accumulation of carbon in the cavity wall. Solvent based lubricants are more uniform than water-based lubricants.
